The Montréal Monstrum Society (MMS) is a Montréal-based collective of horror scholars, researchers, and filmmakers, offering two ten-week semesters of courses in horror and related genres in cinema, television, literature, and other media. MMS instructors are established and developing scholars, artists, curators, programmers, writers, and filmmakers who volunteer their time to create and contribute to courses and lectures for the Montréal community.

The Montréal Monstrum Society was founded in 2017 by Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare and Kristopher Woofter, the former co-directors (from 2013-2017) of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, Montréal. Anne Golden and Karen Herland joined as co-directors in 2018.
The MMS mandate is to provide the Montréal community access to scholarly approaches to horror and related genres in the interest of encouraging critical analysis and debate, and building community. We welcome everyone, from the hardcore fans to the mildly curious.
Courses are open to anyone interested, at a suggested donation of $7 per class, or what you can pay. A significantly discounted one-time payment of $30 per semester is also available. Établi à Montréal, la Société Monstrum de Montréal est un collectif d’universitaires, de chercheurs et de cinéastes spécialisés dans le cinéma, la télévision et la littérature d’horreur. Dédiés à donner des cours sur le sujet, pendant 2 semestres de 10 semaines, les instructeurs du MMS sont des chercheurs, artistes, commissaires, programmateurs, auteurs et cinéastes établis, offrant ces cours sur une base bénévole.
La Société Monstrum de Montréal a été fondée par Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare et Kristopher Woofter, anciens co-directeurs du Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies – Montréal (de 2013 à 2017). Anne Golden et Karen Herland ont rejoint MMS en tant que co-directrices en 2018.
Le mandat de l’institution est d'offrir à la communauté montréalaise un accès l’horreur et les genres qui s’y rapportent sous un angle scolaire et érudit; encourager l’analyse critique et les débats et bâtir ainsi une communauté autour du genre. Tout le monde est le bienvenu : qu’il s’agisse du fan endurci ou du néophyte curieux.

Les cours sont ouverts à tous, sur une base suggérée de 7$ par cours, ou une contribution volontaire. Un tarif unique de 50$ par semestre est également offert.

Co-Directors
Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare, PhD, teaches courses in genre cinema, grotesque traditions, and monster ethics in the Humanities department at John Abbott College in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
Anne Golden, MFA, is on the Creative Arts faculty of John Abbott College, and is Artistic Director of Groupe Intervention Video, an artist-run distribution, exhibition and production centre for videos directed by women.
Karen Herland, MA, teaches courses on cultural constructions of gender and sexuality at Concordia University’s Simone de Beauvoir Institute.
Kristopher Woofter, PhD, teaches courses in the American Gothic, the Weird tradition, and horror in literature, cinema and television in the English department at Dawson College in Montréal, Québec, Canada.
LOCATION
As of Fall 2019, after years of being hosted by Microcinema [ etre] on avenue du Parc, MMS courses will take place in a space provided by Groupe Intervention Vidéo in the Plateau Mont-Royal.
